Q&A
‘Humankind and I must begin a dialogue’
Following the joint winning by Al Gore and the R K Pachauri-led Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change of the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to preserve the global environment, Jug Suraiya interviews Mother Earth on what she feels about the entire crusade to save her:
Since you were born some 4.5 billion years ago, you have faced many dangers from colliding meteors to volcanic eruptions and tectonic plate shifts. What has been the greatest danger you’ve faced so far? It is so ironic but the most perfect being I’ve given birth to has also been my most dangerous enemy. And that being is Homo sapiens, the only species that can change the course of evolution and by doing so, change the destiny of all species and of the planet itself. Do you think this human child of yours will ever see the error of his ways and make amends to you? I can only hope so, because if he does not and I am destroyed then he himself will be destroyed and everything else on this planet. Already, every day, several hundred species of plant and other forms of life are being annihilated, with no hope of resurrection. What effect this will ultimately have on my health is not known, either to me or to anyone else. But certainly, it cannot be beneficial. What is needed is that humankind and I must begin a dialogue as we had in the past and which he has forgotten about in his pell-mell rush towards an ever-receding goal which he calls progress. Are you doing anything to try and initiate this dialogue? Yes, I’m giving hints such as the melting of the polar ice caps, tsunamis, global warming, and other warning signs that something is very wrong and needs to be put right. All these should be seen as signs that a dialogue between me and my wilful child is crucial for our mutual survival, and that dialogue cannot be put off to a tomorrow that might never come but must be started today, now. What can ordinary individuals do to help start this dialogue and carry it forward? The first thing they can do is to open their eyes and ears and see the many wounds they’ve inflicted on me and hear the pain these wounds have caused me and then they can find out how they themselves can help in healing them. How? By wasting fewer of my resources, by adopting lifestyles that are less harmful to me, by burning up less energy and reducing polluting emissions. To begin with, you, reader, could try and ensure that the paper this is printed on is recycled.
All the attention given is much deserved as the changes can threaten the living condition of the child of Earth.. homosapiens.. We as individuals can make changes.. our small effort can help to improve the Face of our mother.. our earth...The blue ball will look as beautiful as ever from the space and from from our hearts.. lets just pledge to be little concious .. like we should switch off lights and other electronic equipments when we dont need them.. a small step help saving resources , which earth wont give us again in near future.
